  Electronic Design Engineer

February 2008

JOB DESCRIPTION
Aber Instruments designs, manufactures and sells equipment for monitoring the concentration of biological cells in bio-processes. The technique is based on radio-frequency impedance measurement. Our main customers are brewers and bio-pharmaceutical companies based in most developed countries world-wide. Most of our end-users are within large, often multi-national organisations and they use the Company’s products at various levels, from research to production.
The Company now requires an Electronic Design Engineer to work within the R&D department of the Company. This person will work on various aspects of research and development and will be responsible to the R&D Director.
This key job will involve furthering the design of the analogue part of our measuring systems. As well as developing circuitry that enables stable and accurate measurements, there will be a requirement to produce smaller, more cost effective and innovative designs. To do this, in addition to electronics, the job demands a good general understanding of physics and of biological processes.
Some of the research work involves collaboration with academic institutions and/or industrial partnerships. The job will require this person to get involved with these partners to enable the production of publications and papers about the use of our technology.

Activities will include:-
  1. R&D on precise impedance measurement circuits in the frequency range 0.1 to 50 Mhz, using analogue and analogue/digital hybrid techniques.
  2. Contributing to the understanding and design of sensors where electrodes are in contact with the sample to be measured. This will involve an understanding of measurement physics including electrode surface effects, materials etc.
  3. Understanding some of the biological aspects of dielectric spectroscopy and methods for extracting the best possible biological information from the impedance measurements.
  4. Modelling of biological and physical measurement systems using spreadsheets and more specialised tools such as SPICE-based software.
  5. Providing technical advice to the Management Team and assisting in the creation of case studies, technical papers, web site forum information and other publications.
  6. It will be necessary for this person to work closely with customers who provide a valuable input to the Company’s process of new product development.

Salary and benefits
Up to £28k, depending upon qualifications and experience.
Other benefits include: Share Incentive Scheme, pension contributions, life insurance and sports club membership. There will be 28 days paid holiday (including public holidays) plus additional days between Christmas and New Year.
PERSON SPECIFICATION

Degree(s):  Electronics / Electronic Engineering, preferably with post graduate qualification such as MSc or PhD involving analogue electronics.
An understanding of wideband analogue circuit techniques, parasitics, modelling and analysis.
Ideally, industrial design experience in RF electronics, instrumentation and/or video analogue circuits.
Knowledge of EMC design principles.
Some experience in, or understanding of, biotechnology would be an advantage.
An understanding of the patents system and principles would also be an advantage.
Career Goals
Aspiration and commitment to build a career in R&D in a growing, advanced engineering-led company.
